Overview

Standard gold plating, at 0.5 to 1.0 microns, is the most widely used thickness in the jewellery industry. It provides a durable, attractive gold finish suitable for earrings, pendants, necklaces, and fashion jewellery that is worn regularly but not subjected to heavy abrasion.

Standard plating strikes the balance between cost and durability that most fashion jewellery and retail collections require. At 0.5–1.0 µm, the gold layer is thick enough to withstand regular wear on low-contact items like earrings, pendants, and necklaces, while remaining economical for production runs of any size.

The finish is bright and consistent, and with proper care — avoiding perfumes, chemicals, and prolonged moisture exposure — standard-plated pieces can maintain their appearance for one to two years of regular wear on appropriate item types.

Standard plating is applied over a copper or nickel base coat, which improves adhesion and provides a smooth, even surface for the gold layer. The base coat also acts as a barrier between the base metal and the gold, reducing tarnish migration.

For clients upgrading silver jewellery or re-plating worn pieces, standard thickness is often the recommended starting point. It provides a noticeable improvement in durability over flash while keeping costs accessible for both individual pieces and wholesale orders.
