Specialist gold plating for pocket watches — restoring antique cases, refreshing worn gilt, and bringing heirloom timepieces back to life.
Pocket watches are among the most personal and historically significant timepieces we work with. Whether you have a Victorian hunter-case watch passed down through the family, a mid-century dress piece that has lost its gilt, or a contemporary pocket watch that needs a fresh finish, our electroplating process delivers results that honour the craftsmanship of the original.
Pocket watch cases present unique plating challenges compared to wristwatches. Many are made from brass, silver, or gold-filled metal — each requiring a different preparation approach. Antique pieces often have engraving, engine-turning, or hand-chasing that must be preserved during the plating process. We take great care to ensure the plating deposit follows the contours of the original decoration rather than filling or obscuring it.
We plate the outer case, inner case, lid, bow (the ring at the top), and pendant (the stem). Chains and fobs can also be plated — whether a simple Albert chain or a more ornate fob chain with attached seals or pendants. We work with yellow gold, rose gold, and rhodium finishes to match the original or achieve a new look.
For pocket watches, we recommend Heavy plating (5–10 µm) on the case exterior and lid, as these surfaces are handled regularly and subject to friction from pocket wear. The inner case and movement-side surfaces can be plated at Standard thickness if desired. Chains are typically plated at Standard or Heavy depending on the client's preference.
We work with private collectors, estate jewellers, horological restorers, and auction houses across Australia. If you are unsure whether your piece is suitable for plating — particularly if it is a rare or museum-quality antique — we are happy to advise before you commit to the service.
What We Plate
How It Works
Send us photos of your pocket watch — exterior, interior, and any chain or fob. We assess the condition, base metal, and engraving, then provide a detailed quote tailored to your piece.
Ship your pocket watch case and components to our Sydney workshop. We recommend insured registered post. The movement does not need to be included unless you want the inner case plated.
The case is ultrasonically cleaned and electrolytically degreased. For antique pieces with engraving or engine-turning, we use a careful hand-cleaning process to preserve the detail.
A copper or nickel undercoat is applied to create an even surface and improve gold adhesion. For silver cases, we apply a gold strike layer first to prevent tarnish migration.
Gold is deposited to your specified thickness. We monitor the process carefully to ensure even coverage across curved surfaces, engraved areas, and hinges without pooling.
Each component is inspected for coverage, adhesion, and preservation of original detail. We photograph the finished piece before carefully packaging and returning it to you.
